What is your opinion of pushy sales reps?

I went to the mall a few days ago, and a lady was selling hand cream and nail filers made from all natural ingredients. I truly loved her product, but I didn't have enough money to buy it. I honestly told her, I love the product, but maybe I'll buy it another day. She asked her boss to give me a discount, and "lowered the price" for me, and started putting the lotion/filer in the bag, but I kept telling her, I have to go right now, maybe some other time. She kept asking me about 7 times and I was so turned off by her sales tactics. I know that some of these employees get paid by comission, but shouldn't they understand that no means no?

I take it that you didn't give in and get it then. Good for you. I am a sales rep. but when people get too pushy I brush them off. I had gone in to buy a new moniter for my computer once and the sales rep tried to sell me the whole computer system even though all I needed was a moniter. I turned around and left and went across the street to their competitors and got exactly what I wanted.
Reply:Just say firmly "No Thanks" and walk away. You don't have to tell them ANY story or anything about your finances, NOTHING! And when you can afford the stuff, go back and buy it. But don't let them take over, its your money, your time, stay in control. That's how they get you in the first place, THEY take control of the situation. Be strong and you be the one in control.
Reply:I can't stand it when sales people do that. It makes not even want to shop at their store any more
Reply:they dont understand, they are paid by commission so if you dont buy it they are not making money. it turn me off too and i usually dont buy from companies who pay their employee like that
Reply:Yeah, they bug the sh!t out of me, but then I try to think, "they are only trying to do their job", maybe she just got lectured by her boss for not being a go-getter and since he was standing right there, she felt like she had to be 110% "the job"





Good news is - you learned that you can get a discount at those mall kiosks by saying you don't have that much money! Inever knew that! :)
Reply:There are two sides to this: These people often have ridiculous sales targets to make, so they HAVE to be pushy. Having worked in retail I do understand that, BUT, that type of behaviour is above and beyond "sales tactics" and would not only put me off her, but off the product as well...
Reply:Whenever someone tries that shite with me, I pivot and am very sweet about it, I cannot stand the hard sell and I know that the bottom floor of any majour department store is a 400% mark up and they have their quota to sell you beauty...some prodiucts sell themselves......like Lancome...but others not doing so well don't have the clientele that they do. Oh they understand "NO" alright, but refuse to accept it, thinking that you will make an exception for them....as on TV when I see the hard sales pitch for Cars....I would NEVER go to a place where the guys are grunting like they are taking a shite, and telling me , rather screaming in that feckin "Team Talk" and say "We know cars!!!"" I am NOT a woman who goes for this, and will take my business elsewhere, I always let them know that I AM IN CHARGE and if I don't wat the purchase with purchase I will go elsewhere or get it online for less anyway .....NO ONE hard sells me, I can beleive that this happened to you, I don't care what their quotas are, at the end of the day, I still have my own coffers to deal with, and how much do I really need?


You did VERY WELL in waloking away, I am laughing that this proves that you CAN negotiate retail. I have, I will OR i WILL get it online,....they are nothing new to me, and if I don't want, need or feel the urge with my limited funds to try something, I am losing no sleep over it!!!!! Fair play to you!!!!

Reply:I have worked in retail sales and telemarketing so I understand the frustrations of customers when they deal with pushy sales people. Like a lot of people have said, they depend on their commission to make their living, unfortunately. For telemarketers, I just hang up the phone on them or if I have a minute, I tell them to get a better job. For sales people at the mall, I just let them babble on and walk right past them without giving them my time or money. You should do the same. Sooner or later, they'll know there are better ways to make a living. Happy shopping!

Reply:I hate them. Their attitude is that you are obligated to buy products from them. You are actually carrying their money and you have a duty to give it to them. Heaven forbid you go to e-bay and find the exact same nail cream for half the price they were marking it up, or go somewhere else for a better deal.

Reply:that is pretty bad. I would get annoyed too. Maybe she noticed that you where really interested and though she had u on the hook and then the discount thing didn't work. It was probably like fishing and having ur fish then when its almost rilled in it gets loose and swims away. She is trying to make money not friends.. but she should think of how far she is pushing people.
