For example, I'd say that Kolo Toure (150K from KSK Beveren), Cesc fabregas (Free from Barcelona), and Cristiano Ronaldo (12.2m from Sporting) have been the best bargains. And I'd say that Andriy Shevchenko (30m from AC Milan), Rio Ferdinand (31.1m from Leeds United) and Wayne Rooney (30m from Everton) have been the most over-payed for.
What about you?
In your opinion, which transfers have been the most value-for-money, and which have been the most ridiculous?
Everything's relative. Of the names mentioned above I would say that Rooney's been a good purchase for the money. Ferdinand hasn't because even though he's now playing really well, he's messed his club around a lot in the past.
But I'm a Swansea fan. Two years ago, when we were in League 1 we bought a young centre-back called Steven Watt from Chelsea. We payed £150,000 for the 18-year old, which was a lot at the time (anything above £100,000 was really pushing the boat out for us).
He was injured when he came to us (Advice for all other clubs, never buy a player whilst he's injured!!!!). He then came back quite quickly, and played one or two matches in the reserves. But apparently he was awful, getting sent off in the second match for kicking a Notts Forest reserve in the face whilst on the floor. He was then banned for 10 matches by the FAW (Football Association of Wales).
He began to get a reputation around Swansea as a pretty heavy drinker. I saw the Scott out one night on Wind Street in Swansea the night before a match, and he was steaming, having an argument with a woman. He then began to get players into trouble, influencing them. On one notorious night out he, Andy Robinson (now playing for Leeds), Leon Knight (now playing for Wycombe) and Izzy Iriekpen (now playing for Scunthorpe) all went out. These are all notoriously heavy drinkers around Swansea.
At the end of the night they were involved in a big fight with a group of Cardiff fans. Robinson and Iriekpen were both arrested and spend the night in the cells. Watt escaped but according to sources he was cautioned by the police about his behaviour.
He was banned by our manager from going out drinking. But one night he was out, and got pretty p*ssed. And as he walked down a staircase in Idols in Swansea he tripped, fell and tore his knee ligaments.
Our manager was furious and put him on the transfer list having not played a single match for Swansea.
But he worked hard on his fitness, quit the bottle, and was taken off the transfer list. But by then the damage was done. Our new manager didn't rate him very much. He was offered a new contract none the less, which lowered his wages substantially. Yet he had even more problems with his injuries. He played in 1 Carling cup match, which we lost. He also played in one or two friendlies, scoring a 30-yard belter against Port Talbot Town, but never played a league match.
He was let go by the club this summer after a season on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, where I don't think he made a senior appearance. He was a complete failiure as a person and especially as a footballer.
We splashed out on him, and he payed us back with unproffessionalism and stupidity.
Undoubtedly the worst signing we've ever made, and has to be a contender for worst signing ever!
Reply:Ronaldo's probably the biggest bargain,12.2 million for 42 goals a season.Toure comes close. If Wenger chose to sell him now,Toure could fetch at least 10 million.
Shevchenko will go down as the biggest flop in the history of transfers.Come to think of it,Malouda,Obi Mikel,Shevchenko,etc..There's a whole bunch of players at Chelsea who are overpayed for and way overrated.
Reply:Best
Fabreags (Free)
C. Ronaldo (12 Million)
T.Henry (14 Million)
Adebatoy (3 Million)
I would also say that Rooney has lived up to that inflated price tag.
Worst
Darren Bent (16.5 Million)
Shevchenko (30 Million) %26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;BAD
If it goes through, Barry is not worth 20 Million and will be a flop for Liverpool.
Reply:Value for Money:
1)Cristiano Ronaldo to Man United (42 goals say it all...)
2)Cesc Fabregas to Arsenal(Arsenal's main man)
3)Fernando Torres to Liverpool(Our Spanish goal-machine)
Most ridiculous:
1)Andriy Schevchenko to Chelsea
(COMPLETELY USELESS...)
Defnitely agree with the Wayne Rooney one.....
Reply:For me
Most VALUE FOR MONEY
Flamini from Arsenal to AC Milan (FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Berbatov 11mil,ronaldo 12mil,fabregas free, evra 5.5 have been the most valued for money.
Reply:Best Buys:Cesc, Clichy, Sagna, Toure, Vidic, Evra, Defoe (good scoring machine, spurs stupid to let him go), Viera, Pires, Henry
to expensive: Rooney, Sheva, Pennant, Ferdinand, Babel, Bent

Roque Santa Cruz - Bayern Munich to Blackburn Rovers
Patrice Evra - Monaco to Manchester United
Wasteful:
Nicholas Anelka - Bolton Wanderers to Chelsea
Alan Smith - Manchester United to Newcastle United
Mido - Tottenham Hotspur to Middlesbough
Reply:I reckon Cantona @1.1m quid and Schmeichel for 650k were the bargains of the century. The greatest goalkeeper ever to play the game, and the greatest living Frenchman.
Reply:Don't think you'll find many fans who will argue with you on Shevchenko being a waste of money.
As for the person who cited Vid and Evra, I certainly hope they're on your bargain list and not the alternative! lol.
Reply:Best: Arsenal - Anelka brought for £500,000 Sold for £23 mill.
Worst: Chelsea - Shevchenko - Brought for £30 mill scored 22 goals in total in two seasons.
Reply:best;
530k from Brondby- Schmeichel
1.2million from LEEDS!!!!! - KING ERIC

Reply:As you mentioned some transfers value for money, also Torres transferred to liverpond, but the flops are Shevchenko and Darren Bent ($13.5 million pounds to spurs) but didn't make an impact.
Reply:Fernando Torres was worth every penny, if Liverpool could get David Villa also that would be fantastic. Emile Heskey was a waste of money.
Reply:Bargain buy for me has to be Tim Cahill, less than 2 mill for a player of his quality, what a buy.
Reply:Don't forget Bosingwa. What a waste of money. Average right back, like ferreira
Reply:yeah,%26amp; dont forget nemanja vidic, evra....
Reply:You are right.
