UK Opinion - What is your feeling about tipping?

I do a job that isn't very highly paid, but I don't get tips - and no-one would ever assume that I would, so why do hairdressers, taxi-drivers, waiters etc. all expect to be tipped? ANd why do I feel bad if I don't leave a tip?

UK Opinion - What is your feeling about tipping?
its a sore point with me ....I send out a meal prepared with all my love %26amp; attention and the bloody waiter gets the tips............

Seriously, i only think you should tip if you feel that the service you have recieved warrants it, not because it is expected. I hate when service charge is added, i always find fault so that i do not have to pay it , it's on principle..........
Reply:I think there are some services that beg for tips because the level of service you get could go either way. Waiters and hairdressers better please you or it affects their income. But someone in retail doesn't get tips because you won't get a better shirt because they were attentive. I don't think taxi drivers should be tipped because it's their job to get you from one place to another. I don't see how one can do that in a good or bad way so what am I rewarding them for?

Totally agree with the UK Chef guy above. I've never thought about that - that the cook should get the tip for the great meal, not the server who just walked it out. This makes me want to give me tip to the cook next time!!!
Reply:I think we tip those professions because they are providing a service, if you don't want to or can't afford to leave a tip then you don't have to, its usually at your own discretion, I don't tip taxi drivers or hairdressers, if the service is good in a restaurant then I do, but if its bad and the food not good then I won't, I agree with you that a lot of people are in jobs that could do with tips but they never get them, don't feel bad about not tipping, its your money.
Reply:Waiters.. tips usually included in service charge

Hairdressers.... not everyone tips

Taxi drivers...no way!

The rule of thumb that I use that if the service and food is exceptional then I leave a tip...but only if.

I know how you feel, but do not feel intimidated. A sweet smile and a thank you is enough these days.

Wait until you are well paid then you can reconsider.

Reply:I don't think that everyone expects it. I do like to tip if I have good service. Where I don't I remove the discretionary service charge and explain why.

PS Here is a tip...Should have stayed on at school ;-)
Reply:The only tip I give is don't get off a bus while it's still moving
Reply:I live in Australia and we do not tip, actually many of the people I know, myself included think the people get paid by their bosses why should I have to pay them on top of paying for my food. The pay here isn't too bad mostly.
Reply:prices are so high now that people think they have already paid enough it hasnt aanything to do with you personally. money is tight for alot of folks and a tip is just more expense that some of us cant afford
